Spirits of Place

multi-channel video and sound, acrylic paintings, skulls

An immersive sound and video installation, Spirits of Place explores animals that are often found in the location of the gallery, while considering how these animals influence the land on which they live. This work asks us what animals have come before, and how to they shape our lives, even when they move on.

Spirits of Place is an installation that combines field recordings taken in Ithaca, NY, combining it with sourced recordings of four animals: a stag, a beaver, coyotes, and foxes. These are then processed and put into a 6 channel speaker array. Placed around the room are four paintings with skulls of each animal in the painting, with the speaker above each animal playing sounds produced by the type of animal. Over the four channel video projection are two speakers which play field recordings from Ithaca, NY.
